again, minor injuries we are told by delta, but no major injuries. without question, a lot of shaken passengers who landed that way in new york city this morning. i want to go to miles o brien, cnn aviation analyst standing by live as well with us on the telephone. miles, something david just mentioned about that berm, the berm is what that aircraft went up onto and slightly over and through that fence. is that berm the only thing keeping that aircraft from veering to the left and into the water that you can carelearly s on the map? yeah, that s clearly the case. that berm is kind of alongside the runway. if you look at the aerial view, you get a sense of it. it s pretty much like a stationary aircraft carrier. the runways there are only 7,000 feet in length. an md-80 on a good day needs about 5,000 feet. it s varsity flying for an airliner to go in there on a
factors here that may have contributed to this incident. and then lastly i would say about the md-88, this is from the md-80 series of planes built by mcdonald douglas. then boeing bought mcdonald douglas. a very very respected workhorse of a plane that s been around for the better part of 30 years. this particular subset the md-88, was specifically requested by delta. so the md-80 family as a whole came out, you know starting in the 80s or so but delta specifically asked their version of it the md-88, to come out in the late 80s, early 90s. it s been very reliable for delta. now they re starting to retire that plane along with most md-80s out there. is it uncommon that the chutes didn t deploy and the passengers had to slide down on the wing? you know i would need a little more information about that, to be honest with you. first of all, to come out over the wing you re not going to have a chute on the wing itself. i need a little more information

we ve seen it in smaller aircrafts. the wings come off, when you re trying to regain control we just had one of these events this past july with an md-80 aircraft they got into thunderstorm activity and they lost control of the airplane. during the recovery they went into a big corkscrew turn and ended up crashing into the ground. the airplane stayed together. it s just that the thunderstorm activity is what put them in an out of control situation. once again this year we have another malaysian-owned air flight that goes down with somewhat mysterious circumstances. is there something about air travel in southern asia that is should give people pause or is this a coincidence? from the way i look at it, have you to look at each of
