Australian authorities announced sanctions against Russian citizen Aleksandr Ermakov over his alleged connection to the Medibank Private data breach in 2022.

The Australian Signals Directorate has reported a 23 per cent jump in reports of cyber attacks, the equivalent of "one every six minutes," as it outlined the escalating threat to the nation in its annual report.

Medibank Private has been hit with a $250 million penalty by financial regulator APRA after a hacking scandal saw millions of Australians have their personal medical information posted online.

Australia said on Friday that Russia must be held accountable for Medibank's massive data breach. This time, patients' data related to alcohol-related illnesses were leaked on the dark web.

The health insurer, which has refused to pay the ransom, said hackers had accessed information belonging to 9.7 million clients, including Prime Minister Albanese.
