Eviction wave threatens US renters, adding to pandemic risks

Millions of renters in the U.S. face a bitter prospect this winter: eviction. Already, the numbers of low-income renters, often people of color, forced from their homes is ticking up. The end of a federal moratorium on evictions, combined with the expiration of pandemic unemployment assistance, could turn that trickle into a flood – by one estimate affecting 40 million Americans. And they would be pushed out at the height of a pandemic, which poses new risks. While medical professionals are urging people to socially distance, people evicted would be doubling up with relatives or friends or trying to find shelters that are already facing pandemic mandates to reduce crowding.
