Three more killed by lightning strikes

Three people were killed by thunderstorms in Kratie province on May 23 and Tbong Khmum province on May 21, according to police officials.
One person died while fishing in Kratie province and two others died while ploughing paddy fields to grow their rainy season rice crop in Tbong Khmum province.
Un Hoiy, Sambok commune police chief, told The Post on May 24 that 35-year-old Tiv Teang, a resident of Sambok commune’s Kampi village in Kratie province’s Chetr Borei district, was struck by lightning on the evening of May 23 while he was fishing in the Mekong River during the storm.

The Tbong Khmum Provincial Administration has set up a 3ha cemetery in the multi-use area in Ponhea Kraek distict’s Trapeang Phlong commune for Muslims who died from Covid-19.
Provincial hall spokesman Mao Dong said that as of May 2, the province had detected 44 cases of Covid-19. Of the number, 21 had recovered, 22 remained hospitalised and one patient had died.
The province currently has three crematoriums in Ponhea Kraek, Memot district and Suong town. Since community transmission broke out in the province, four villages had been in lockdown – two in Kroch Chhmar district, one in Tbong Khmum district and another in Ponhea Kraek district.

Memot gold mine environmental impact study underway

Renaissance Minerals (Cambodia) Ltd, a subsidiary of Australia-listed Emerald Resources NL, is conducting an Initial Environmental Impact Assessment (IEIA) for a new gold-mine project in Tbong Khmum province’s Memot district.
Located 95km southeast of Renaissance’s existing Okvau Gold Project in Mondulkiri province’s Keo Seima district, operations manager Bernie Cleary told The Post that the 107.10sq km mining concession in the Memot area is highly prospective for gold exploration.
“Our vision is to have a net positive impact on near-mine environmental and social values by targeting strict compliance with corporate governance, international guidelines and local law, and engage and collaborate with all stakeholders in the project area,” he said.

Couple arrested for hiding gun used in police murder

A married couple has been sent to court following their arrest in Treak commune of Tbong Khmum province’s Memot district on January 16 for allegedly hiding the gun used by the suspect in the shooting death of a senior Phnom Penh municipal police official in the capital last month.
Phnom Penh municipal deputy police chief Song Ly said the suspects are a 32-year-old woman and her 31-year-old husband from Dak Por village of Memot district’s Treak commune. They were both sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on January 18.
the officers had to step over the woman to get to the back room where on the bed they saw the little girl. motionless. when i first seen her i thought she was dead. was she doing anything? no. eventually i touched her and she said leave me alone. tell pe abome about the emot. she was laughing. barely. the officers could see the little girl had been shot in the head. dry blood was everywhere. they could tell she had been left there a long time. she had labored breathing. have you seen any one breathing like that who made it? no, i have not. there was no time to wait for an ambulance. an officer at the scene barked for a police car to take her to the hospital. first, officers had to get her to the car. from the house to the car, it seems like a long way.
