with kim brunhuber. we re seeing a lot of anger across the united states this morning and demands for police reform, but all of it has been peaceful. the american cities were on edge that they might not be. this after the city of memphis released shocking police videos of the january 7th attack. in memphis, for example, protestors marched on to a major interstate bridge across the mississippi river bringing traffic to a standstill. no arrests. tyre nichols died three days after the violent encounter. he was just 29 years old. his funeral has been set for next wednesday. all five officers have been fired and on thursday they were charged with second degree murder, kidnapping and other offenses. arraignments are set for next month. we want to play some of the newly released videos. they are difficult and disturbing to watch and there s a lot of foul language. now we don t scenic cools being pulled over for alleged reckless driving but the first clip is from an officer arrivin
official misconduct and officia oppression. there are facing a minimum of 6 years behind bars. four of the five cops were released on bond this morning. here is what police are telling us. under an re seven, ronna mc daniel nichols vehicle was pulled over for reckless driving . the police chief says there was a physical altercation in the cops tried. nichols out of the car. pepper spray was deployed, and nichols took off on foot. there was a foot pursuit, and officers then apprehended him a a different location and anothe confrontation occurred. nichols was arrested. the police chief says the level of aggression from police at that point is unexplainable. this happened a few blocks from nichols home, and he died three days later in the hospital on january 10th. here s what we don t know. the police chief says she is no sure why the cops stopped him i the first place. it s unclear how far nichols ram , how police apprehended him, and how long the confrontation lasted. we are
outrage, anger and grief. tyre nichols repeatedly beaten, kicked, tased and pepper sprayed by the police. on video for the world to see. the family of the father, skateboarder and photographer calling for peace as people around the country take their emotions out onto the streets in protest. and there are new questions about how to break the political stalemate to achieve some kind of real police reform. five former memphis cops already charged with murder, two more have now been relieved of duty. and a doj investigation is underway. this morning, we have memphis community leaders, experts on policing and a member of congress joining this crucial conversation. thanks to you for joining us this morning, i m katie phang, this is special coverage of the leash of the tylee nichols video. right now, the world is washing and reacting to that footage showing five memphis police officers kicking, punching, just beating 29 year old nichols after what was supposed to be just a traffic
good afternoon. i am back. a little bit later on, i m gonna tell you why you have not seen me for a couple of weeks. we want to start this hour with calls for action. protests in memphis in around the country today. this comes after the release of the shocking video of the police beating that led to death of tyre nichols. we re gonna show you some videos with a warning. it is really disturbing. we are showing it not to sensationalize it, but because watching it is the only way to really understand the extreme nature of what happened. from the moment we see tyre nichols, the assault began. they use pepper spray and a taser on him. even before he ran. police caught up with him and beat him. watch this. give me your hands. watch out. give me your hands. hit him. watch out. give me your hands. [screaming] give us your hands! [screaming] in the end, nichols was left with just one simple plea as a grown man. that plea was for his mother. watch out, watch out. mom! m
stop that led to the beating and a few days later the death of tyre nichols. want to renew the video that is graphic but seeing it is the only way to understand the brutality of this attack that began seemingly the moment that nichols was stopped. [inaudible] [inaudible] so after nichols fled, a group of officers that caught up with him and then they beat him. you see it here, mercilessly. and in the, and all he could do what cry out for his mother. [inaudible] this is yet another incident that shows some of those that are paid to protect and serve instead of out of control and violent. and it has many across the country saying enough. enough. five police officers, it doesn t matter, not even one of them to say no this is not right. there is no words to describe it. i was sick to my stomach, i had to walk away a few times you know? it just breaks your heart. we have to stand up and be reminded that this is not just a memphis thing or a sacramento or california thing, it
