Thank you, Peter Hartcher, for maintaining that the issue is about integrity of public office (âResponse is what weâve come to expect of Morrison governmentâ, March 4). As troubling as it was to watch Christian Porterâs anguish at his media conference, I am more troubled by the fact that while the police were investigating the matter Porter did not step aside as Attorney-General. Instead of respecting the independence of police investigations and due process, the Prime Minister made public comments on the suspectâs innocence.As it is, the Morrison government has made it clear that for a person (a woman) to raise issues concerning the integrity of one of our public office holders she must be capable of proving them beyond reasonable doubt.
