One sailor shot near Fort Detrick released from hospital, one remains in critical condition

THAYER | STARS AND STRIPES Published: April 7, 2021 One of two sailors wounded Tuesday in a shooting near Fort Detrick, Md., has been released from a Baltimore hospital, though the other is still in critical condition, according to the Navy. The two men were shot at about 8:20 a.m. by Petty Officer 3rd Class Fantahun Woldesenbet, 38, at a Navy warehouse located in Frederick, the city outside of the Army base. After shooting the two sailors, Fantahun drove to Fort Detrick, attempted to enter the base and was killed about 25 minutes later as he ran from base police. All three sailors were assigned to a Navy research center at Fort Detrick, but officials have declined to offer any possible motive in the shooting.

Nimitz-class carrier in service with the United States Navy, the nuclear-powered USS  Carl Vinson (CVN-70) was launched in 1980 and entered service in 1983. As with other carriers in her class, CVN-70 can carry more than 65 fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, while she can travel more than 5,000 nautical miles in less than 7 days in support of national tasking. The carrier has a notable combat record and was deployed during Operational Desert Strike, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Southern Watch and Operation Enduring Freedom. The carrier was also deployed twice to the Western Pacific in 2017 and 2018 respectively and was the carrier that supported the F-35C tests during the Rim of the Pacific 2018 exercise.

Legion honors Veteran of the Month

Navy veteran Jon Hitchcock has been named February’s Veteran of the Month by American Legion Post 58. Hitchcock was a supply corps officer and retired as a CDR in the U.S. Navy. He served from December 1978 until October 1997. He served aboard the Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) as a gold crew supply officer and a number of shore commands in support of submarine and aviation maintenance programs. He was deployed to the Indian Ocean in support of the Iranian Hostage Crisis in 1980. He also was responsible for implementing and upgrading Navy ship and Aviation squadron maintenance software. Hitchcock was a decorated veteran earning the Submarine Supply Dolphins, Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (2), Navy Achievement Medal (2), the Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Navy Expeditionary Medal.
