Freddie Mac has named former Wells Fargo deputy general counsel Heidi Mason its new general counsel.

Freddie Mac has appointed Heidi Mason as executive vice president and general counsel, the enterprise said this week. Mason has 25 years of experience in mortgage lending, financial services, consumer protection and securities law, Freddie Mac said. The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp., or Freddie Mac, had a pretty good year overall in 2021, finishing with total equity of $28 billion — 71% greater than its net worth at year end 2020. That’s just one key takeaway from its fourth-quarter and year-end earnings report, released Thursday. Some other highlights:

The net worth of Freddie Mac is now $28 billion, more than three times what it was pre-pandemic. The GSE posted $12.1B in income in 2021.

However, leadership noted that 2021 was the second record year for new single-family mortgages and also discussed how the government sponsored-enterprise plans to further rebuild its capital.

The government-sponsored enterprise has 45 days to submit a plan on how it intends to meet the increased target for 2022 through 2024.

The combined refinance and purchase total was nearly double the average quarterly volume logged before the pandemic, the company said in its third-quarter earnings call.
