The State has apologised to Joanne Hayes for what was described in court as the truly appalling hurt and stress caused to her and her family.
The apology, which was read out in the High Court today, brings an end to proceedings aimed at vindicating her good name once and for all.
Ms Hayes was wrongly charged with the murder of a baby found on a beach in Co Kerry in 1984.
Outside court after certain declarations were approved this afternoon, her solicitor Patrick Mann, addressed the media on her behalf.
He said: She asked me to say: I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself and my family to acknowledge all those who have supported us over the past 36 years.

If you thought Jaguar’s Vision GT Coupe was a doozy in Gran Turismo for PlayStation 4, wait until you get behind the wheel of Jaguar’s latest virtual endurance racer. The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo SV is an amped-up version of its predecessor. And with almost twice the power, it’s slated to offer double the excitement for racing gamers around the world.
“The Vision GT is a dramatic and visually arresting car which showcases what’s possible when the traditional boundaries governing real-world car design are completely removed,” said Julian Thomson, Jaguar Design Director.

If you’re still not a fan of racing sim video games, then cars like the new Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo SV might just talk you into buying a PlayStation only so you can try out Gran Turismo. The GT SV will be available exclusively within the game sometime next year.
Here are the (theoretical, since it’s only a virtual model) stats for this endurance racer: four electric motors producing 1,877 HP (1,903 PS) and 2,478 lb-ft (3,360 Nm) of torque, 0-60 mph in 1.65 seconds and a 255 mph (410 km/h) top speed.
The Jaguar Design team took last year’s Vision GT Coupe and put it through the ringer, while also taking into consideration gamer feedback from online videos and forums. The carmaker also used design references from the C-type, D-type, XJR-9 and the hardcore XJR-14.
