A local transient faces charges that he broke into an Iowa City apartment and refused to leave.
According to arrest records, 24-year-old Michael Pennell forced his way into an apartment on Broadway Street by breaking the door just before 11:15 Friday night. Pennell knows the apartment owner, but does not stay there. The owner told Pennell to leave, but he allegedly refused.
Pennell also allegedly refused orders to leave from arriving officers, who had to resort to force to get him into handcuffs.
Pennell, who lists his address as Shelter House, is charged with Trespass Causing Damage Greater Than $300 and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
