Kirkland Mayor Michel Gibson is confident there will be some type of public parking available once the REM light-rail station is fully constructed near the RioCan Centre along Highway 40.
Gibson said discussions are taking place between the major stakeholders, including the Broccolini Real Estate Group and RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust, who are partnering to redevelop the RioCan site with a massive residential, commercial and office complex.

Currently, there is no park-and-ride option allocated for the Kirkland REM station which is slated to be operational by 2024.
Having begun his political career as a councillor in Kirkland in 1991 and having served as mayor for the last eight years, Mayor Michel Gibson is seeking a third mandate in the November municipal election.
âBecause of the pandemic it will be very hard for me to knock on the 6,400 doors to see my residents,â Gibson said. âWe have to be safe and mailing in ballot is what I hope the Provincial Government will consider seriously.â
One of Gibsonâs platform for the new mandate will be to âmaintaining and even improving services by keeping tax increases to a minimum as in 2021 our local tax on the average house increased by only $44. or 1%, way below inflation.â

Kirkland Mayor Michel Gibson said a new mixed-use development on the site of RioCan Centre is going help revitalize the area around the retail complex, located next to Highway 40.
The Broccolini Real Estate Group and RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust announced last week that they will be partners in a major project that will see the complete redevelopment of the site, including offerings of commercial, office and residential space.

Although there is no public parking planned for the future REM station at the new development, Gibson is confident there will be some kind of parking arrangement for users of the REM station, which is to be operational by 2023-24.
