Voters will be deciding non-binding item on Indigenous People s Day

Wicked Local For years, the celebration of Columbus Day went on without protest in Wellesley, which has a substantial population of people of Italian-American descent. But more recently, there has been a hard-fought battle to replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day. The March 2 ballot contains a referendum on the issue. The referendum results are to inform the Select Board, said Town Clerk K.C. Kato. However, the information is not binding. 2020 MLK celebration goes virtual

Wicked Local Each year, the World of Wellesley (WOW) sponsors the town’s annual Martin Luther KIng Jr. event to remember and celebrate the man, his legacy and to pay forward his message of choosing to love over the carrying the burden of hatred. Easthampton weighs whether to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day

Easthampton weighs whether to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day Updated Dec 15, 2020; Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937 when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president. Amherst, Northampton, Somerville, Cambridge and Brookline now celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day. In 1492 Christopher Columbus, with trio of ships, Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, had sailed from Spain, landing in what is now called The Bahamas Oct. 12 of that year. A group called Italian Americans for Indigenous Peoples Day wrote a letter to Easthampton City Council that is part of the council’s packet for the Oct. 14 meeting, when the body scheduled a discussion on the matter for Dec. 16.
