MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Commissioners in Tennessee's most populous county approved an ordinance that removes questions about criminal histories from most applications to join volunteer boards and commissions, officials said Tuesday.

Election Commission staff previously said they would withdraw the lawsuit if there were new machines by August. It is unclear what they will do now.

During a contentious four-hour discussion Monday, the Shelby County Commission approved $5.8 million to buy new voting machines.

The Shelby County Commission is expected to approve the change, removing a question on applications about past arrest and criminal histories.

Jordan Carpenter is seeking to overthrow incumbent Brandon Morrison to represent parts of East Memphis and Germantown on the Shelby County Commission.

The renovations to the building formerly owned by CoreCivic are expected to be completed by March 2023, the countys director of public works said.
