In Q4FY24, the bank wrote off Rs 3,852 crore to cover for the microloans that are under investigation by the NCGTC.

The bank had taken insurance of the portfolio of Rs 20,800 crore under the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU) scheme. The NCGTC has flagged that the loans were either evergreen or that the bank created fictitious accounts to obtain the maximum guarantee cover

Brokerages Jefferies and Nomura have slashed their target prices for the stock of the Kolkata-based lender that emerged as a full-service bank after decades of operations as a microfinancier.

Bandhan Bank managing director Chandra Shekhar Ghosh has denied about any irregularity in those accounts and evergreening of loans. "The audit issue is taking time to resolve because it involves a humungous 51 lakh borrower accounts. Stakeholders should not worry about it," Ghosh told ET in an interview. These loans are backed by two separate government guarantee schemes.

The bank clarified that the regulator has not initiated an audit of the bank, but only the CGFMU claim pertaining to the portfolio. The bank applied for a second tranche of around Rs 1,290 crore after receiving the first tranche of recovery from the Credit Guarantee Fund of Micro Units (CGFMU).
