Accident and Emergency Departments in england have recorded their worst performance since current records began in 2004. Other targets covering cancer and routine hospital treatment are also being missed. Lets take a look at some of those targets and the latest statistics published this morning. The government target is a maximum four hour wait for those in a e. But todays figures show only 83. 6 of patients, thats one in six patients, were treated or assessed in a e within four hours in october. Thats a sharp drop on september and down from 89. 1 in october last year. The number of patients waiting for routine operations in england was 4. 42 million in september the highest ever. The nhs target is to have all patients start routine treatment within 18 weeks. But todays figures show more than 672,000 people were waiting more than 18 weeks the highe

Scotland has banned plastic stemmed cotton buds over fears that theyre harming wildlife. The new regulations will prevent their sale and manufacture. David cowan reports. Bathed in autumn sunshine, this east lothian beach looks beautiful. Is that one there . But ugly pieces of plastic are scattered in the sand. Lets have a look. Six years ago, a charity called fidra noticed thousands of plastic stemmed cotton buds washed up along the coast. They re not just unsightly, theyve been found in the stomachs of fulmars and turtles. Fidra has talked to manufacturers and retailers into switching to paper stems and today, new Scottish Government regulations come into force. Well, its going to be against the law to sell these plastic cotton buds any more. So, we should start seeing paper cotton buds replacing them in shops. Thereve been fierce clashes between turkish troops and kurdish militias in northeastern syria. Much of the fighting has been in the border area near ras al ain. Turkey claims its military has entered the town, but the kurdish Led Syrian Democratic forces dispute this. Since fighting broke out on wednesday, nearly 50 civilians are believed to have been killed and more than 100,000 people have fled their homes. Ankara says it wants to establish a 20 mile deep buffer zone, across the frontier with syria, to keep out kurdish militias and resettle syrian refugees.
