able to get everyone out of the way. and that may be actually what helped prevent so many injuries on the ground after this crane collapsed. you heard from the mayor, you heard from those officials that this could have been a lot worse. so it does seem that five people were injured, including some firefighters responding here to the scene. doesn't sound like there were any violations with this construction that was going on at this particular building, but certainly there's a lot of questions about what went wrong. it does appear to the workers, though, it was some sort of mechanical issue as they were loading that heavy concrete to bring up to one of those top floors where the crane was operating. again, five injuries and we will continue to figure out exactly what's going to happen here on the scene. k imagine the traffic around here is incredibly horrible for people who are trying to get to work in this midtown area, but most of these streets are cleared from people and it's just emergency vehicles and onlookers of this incredible incident that happened here in midtown manhattan. >> to that end we should say for folks who are not necessarily
exiting the building. some are wearing hair nets, may indicate they were involved in administering medical procedures at the time. again, this is an office building, it's not an actual hospital. northside hospital, the affiliated hospital is up at the intersection north of the city, but phil, i'm sorry, steve, do woe know if there is a specific area or just casting a net across the entire metropolitan atlanta area? >> i think they are trying to cast a wide net but also prevent the means to escape, by shutting down the marta and schools as well. schools are put on lock-down, how the fear, how the rear terror ripples out. anyone with a kid in public schools in midtown, shopping, working in midtown area, a sense of fear and uncertainty at this point.
you've got to imagine police and security were going in these buildings telling people to shelter in place. the ability to get thousands of people in the middle of a metropolitan area in the middle of lunchtime to shelter in place within a matter of minutes, really, i mean, goes to show not only how functional and effective our police and security in midtown are but also the power of social media and how this is spreading. again, if you know anyone who commutes in the midtown area, police asking people not to go to that area right now, all the roads blocked off. if someone is in midtown right now, they are asking you to shelter in place. i saw someone tweet saying they were grabbing lunch and as they went to leave, they were instructed to shelter in place away from windows. atlanta police saying the suspect still on the run right now. we do have those surveillance images that they gathered very quickly from what appears to be inside the building. >> yeah, a good perspective here live for you of the 11 alive sky tracker of the police response. you know, it looks like they're spread out.
