Original steel from Mackinac Bridge available through auction By Amber Ainsworth The 60-year-old steel is in 55-gallon barrels that weigh about 147 pounds and contain about 140 pieces. There are five barrels full of Mighty Mac steel available from the Mackinac Bridge Authority right now, with multiple bids placed on all of them. One of the barrels is already up to $725. The Mighty Mac opened Nov. 1, 1957, and it currently holds the title as the third-longest suspension bridge in North America, according to the website. Considering its age, the grating was originally coated with lead-based paint. The auction listings say its mostly gone, but buyers must sign a hold harmless agreement, regarding the lead and structural condition of the gratings.
