Oppenheimer's biographer Kai Bird spoke about the physicist's fascination with Hinduism, and explained his interpretation of the oft-quoted 'death' line from the Bhagavad Gita.

Devdutt Pattanaik disagreed with J Robert Oppenheimer's interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita, and said that the physicist was probably in a 'dharam sankat'.

Indian mythologist and writer Devdutt Pattanaik has recently challenged this interpretation, asserting that Oppenheimer misconstrued the original quote from the ancient text. ​​Speaking with The Indian Express, Pattanaik elucidated the accurate translation as, "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the Mighty One… I become death, the destroyer of worlds."
