Conservative activists push voter fraud claims to recruit an army to police California recall polls Paige St. John and Anita Chabria Los Angeles Times View Comments Los Angeles   Conservative activists who have long promoted unproven and often false claims of voter fraud in California are spearheading a major new effort to capitalize on the upcoming gubernatorial recall vote, attempting to recruit tens of thousands of volunteers to police the polls on the day of the election. The effort is the outgrowth of a campaign waged for nearly three decades to challenge ballots and voter registrations in California one often aimed at immigrants, a Los Angeles Times investigation has found.

California Recall Election Date Set for September

California Recall Election Date Set for September  California residents will vote Sept. 14 on whether to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom, whose handling of the COVID-19 pandemic sparked fierce criticism from small businesses and the public. Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis called the election July 1, days after legislation was signed by Newsom to bypass a 30-day financial review of the recall. Eliminating that stage of the process allowed the recall timeline to accelerate; the election otherwise might have been called for October or November. Although the reasoning for an early election was not immediately known, recall supporters said they were skeptical about the date selected.

Gavin Newsom and replace him with another candidate in an election set for Sept. 14, the lieutenant governor announced Thursday. Secretary of State Shirley Weber certified the gubernatorial recall petition earlier Thursday, prompting Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis to set an election date between 60 and 80 days from the date of certification. While the signatures have only just been officially certified, Weber announced in late April that the organizer of the recall petition had collected more than the approximately 1.5 million validated signatures required. During a 30-day period, voters who signed the recall petition could request their signatures be removed, but only 43 voters did so, Weber announced last week. More than 1.7 million signatures supporting the recall were verified.
