Coachman s Dinner and Pancake House (1301 S. State Street), an iconic piece of State Street architecture for nearly 50 years, has officially closed. Notice of this closure showed up on the restaurant s marquee a few weeks ago, and the news quickly went viral on social media. Coachman s owner Mike Nikols has plans to convert the property into a commercial/residential zone where we ll see another set of condos and businesses appear over the next few years. With the imminent closure of Blue Plate Diner on the horizon, it s clear that we re going to be looking at a very different cityscape for the Sugar House area for better or worse.

The well-known Coachmanâs Dinner & Pancake House in Salt Lake City is closing to make way for a new development.
Many patrons and passersby learned of the iconic 1960s-era dinerâs demise over the weekend from a notice posted beneath its towering State Street lamplight and sign, saying the locale would be shuttered âafter 60 successful years.â
âThank you! We were honored to serve you and be a part of many celebrations with great food and service,â the message at 1301 S. State St. declared. âWe will miss you!â
A longtime customer echoed the views of many loyal fans, lamenting the closure on Facebook and noting the restaurantâs vintage decor, less-expensive prices, large portions and specialty in cooking classic American comfort foods like pancakes and fried chicken.
