The Rum Kitchen is taking over the old Jamie's Italian in Black Lion Street A Brighton restaurant owner applied for a new premises licence so that diners could drink at the bar after their meal, a licensing panel hearing was told. The Rum Kitchen’s owner, Icarus Leisure Soho, applied for a premises licence that would allow 45 people to drink in the bar area after a meal, with up to 15 standing. The company, run by managing director Mike Parnham, 45, also wanted an off-sales licence, which would permit takeaway sales and deliveries. And the business applied to Brighton and Hove City Council for a late-night refreshment licence so that the premises could stay open until 1am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Close to Brighton’s The Lanes area on Black Lion Street, the 7,000 sq ft site has been vacant since Jamie’s Italian collapsed in 2019.
Opening on 11 July, Rum Kitchen Brighton will seat 300 covers internally over two floors. It will also have a private dining area with its own bar, and a roof terrace.
Rum Kitchen launched in 2013 in the Notting Hill building that was once home to the Mangrove Club, which was famously run by Black community activist Frank Crichlow in the 1960s.
