Those who shun vaccine responsible for viral path
I have observed anti-vaccination protesters holding up signs stating “Not anti-vax, pro-choice”. And this is of course true; as sovereign citizens in a vibrant democracy they should have every right to exercise their own choice. But I am sure they will agree that with rights come responsibilities. Modern genetic tracing is marvellously exact and the pathways of viral infections through a population can be traced. Therefore those people who of their own choice do not take the available precautions to avoid viral infection have the responsibility to pay for all costs of treatment for themselves (but of course they must have the right to choose

I have attended the Australian Open every year for at least the past decade. But not this year.
It is clear the mighty dollar is driving the decision to proceed, despite the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak (we’re still not confident our government has learnt its lessons from the second wave), and many Victorians stranded interstate not allowed back in, while about 1200 tennis stars and their entourages arrive.

Findings only add to political sledging
The ‘‘scathing’’ findings of the Victorian inquiry into hotel quarantine (‘‘Shoddy is as shoddy did, and 801 died’’, 22/12) highlight the use of a privatised and casualised security workforce as a primary failure. Does anyone really believe that Victorian Labor’s opposite number in the Liberals would have made better decisions, or been more likely to accept responsibility for fatal failings in the pandemic response? Does anyone truly believe that an approach which blatantly preferred the economy to humanity would have resulted in fewer deaths?
