from that. the cold front to the west is taking its sweet time. showers across missouri into michigan. it is pushing to the far east. we are not going to get any of that as well. we are in between the high pressure that keeps us nice and quiet for the day. if you have outdoor plans you lucked out because both of the storms stay out of our hair. in it the mid 50's by lunch time 58 degrees. we will see a few passing clouds otherwise it will be dry and pleasant out there. for tonight clear once again. falling down into the 50's in downtown but 40's into the suburbs. we will have light winds and a chance to get outside with the dry weather. we will cee-lo 80s by wednesday and thursday. >> the home of edgar allen po will be open for visitors for free in october. it is part of free fall which includes admissions to museums and festivals for free. the home was closed a year ago because of a lack of funding. after october it will close the doors once again until hopefully a permanent reopening in the spring. he lived in the home from 1833 to 1835. historic and meant amousentimen has been ripped off. a church bell was stolen from a storage shedd. church members are pleading for its safe return. >> the bell was taken from this old church building put into storage. no one bothered it for 15 years until last week. >> i was very upset. i have had that bell there that long. >> don has been holding on to a treasure sings 1993 when a 200 pound 100-year-old church bell was removed from the united methodist church in downtown mount ari and placed in his private storage shed. he went to check on it lake he had thousands of times before. i noticed someone had broken into my storage area in my house and the bell was gone. it took at least 2 to 3 people to carry it. it is very heavy. kind of awkward to carry. >> the church bell is cast bronze similar to the one in this picture 2 feet high and 2 feet across. the church congregation was plan to go put it in the new church that replaced the old one. they were going to hang it in the new addition when it was completed next year. >> it is a big bell in the world of castings and bronze and things like that. the metal is worth a lot of money in scrap metal, i would be sick if it was scrapped. >> maryland state police say they have alerted pawn and scrap shots in the area there's no surveillance video and no leads. the shed was kept unlocked but in a secure area. investigators believe the suspects dragged it from the shed to main street. don is hoping the criminals will have a changer heart. >> they can deliver it to the church. if they want to drop it off at the church. we have a place it could be dropped off here beside the church and nobody would know nobody would ask. >> police say they have investigated president and lawmakers in the democratically controlled led the senate. they will not approve any plan that changes changes to the healthcare reform act. >> covering theation the firefighters battle the four alarm fire. the fire raged for hours rescue crews had to evacuate people from inside and hundreds have been left homeless. one firefighter was injured after slipping on a wet scare case. it is believed an electrical fire on the 5th floor started that fire. irony in pennsylvania as a firehouse goes up in flames. that blaze started at the historic benjamin franklin firehouse in philadelphia. 40 firefighters and 8 trucks responded to the fire which suffered substantial damage. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation but the stories believe it originated in the medic unit. >> the deaths of 19 firefighters the largest loss of life for firefighters since september 11th. release the findings of the investigation and dan shanahan has the details. >> the fire single deadliest wildfire for firefighters in 80 years claimed the lives of 19 members of the granite mountain hot shot team in june. saturday officials released the findings of their three month investigation. >> the report is the first account of the hot shot squad's movements to fire breaks to their last known lunch break site. the lookout and the loan survivor notice the fire intensifying line to get the first elementary school under a first historic agreement passed by the general assembly. it is part of a longer long-term construction plan bay the city's board of investments. they will oversee and help fund the building of 15 new schools and the renovation of dozens more. >> feasibility studies we have 13 ongoing right now. we will determine which will be replacement and which will be renovation schools. >> the construction agreement must still be approved the state board of education and the board of public works. >> a mixed bag of results for the 50,000 maryland students who took the sat or scholastic aptitude test last year. the scores are down slightly but more students are taking the exam. >> the sat has been a measuring stick for high school students making plans for high school college. they show they have work to do. scores were down four points two points in math two points in writing. the critical reading scores remain the same. there were more students taking the sat. these 9th graders are taking part in the district's advanced individual determination program. it is a college readiness system. some students already used it to their advantage. >> at first i didn't have any idea how to do the sat. now that we have sat prep. avid helps a lot. we have a tutorial ones a week so that will help us in all of our classes. >> those who run the program tell you it is no accident. on >> i have to take ap courses i have to take good grades. >> we encourage everyone to use avid strategies cornell notes. ap english 11 has sat prep infused in the curriculum for us. >> they learn about the sat long before they get to high school. >> we have avid programs in the middle school. aside from that we are working closely with the college board and they are giving us the early data to make sure we can give kids and support the intervention they need. >> that's what teachers are counting on. >> there are recognizing there are no short cuts when then. >> football players at the academy at frederick douglas high school are getting help from the nfl to get on a path toward college. >> the players have a new academic coach to help them in the classroom. we have more with how the nfl is playing the role. >> the marching band at the academy at frederick douglas high school helped kickoff a new program thursday to help football players on their way to college. >> academic support getting ready for college, life skills, programming different aspects. but the main goal is graduation. >> thanks to the family league of baltimore and money from the nfl michelle harper is the new academic coach for the team as part of a pilot program called first and goal. she is working with him after school and on weekend to keep them on track off the field. >> working with academics trying to get a high gpa get in college. >> make sure we keep our grades up for the school and prepared for the sat and hsa's. she puts the hammer down. >> she will work with the athletes during the off season getting ready for college not only working for changes but prep for the sat's as well as guiding them on education. >> there are so many opportunities for student athletes. these guys may never get to go to college without the scholarships. they are available. without going to college you can't, it's hard to be successful in life. >> they are grateful believed an electrical fire on the 5th floor started that blaze. irony in pennsylvania as a firehouse goes up in flames. the blaze started at the historic benjamin franklin firehouse in old city, good news is many of these you can do to actually improve your brain health and make your brain bigger. there are things you can do to maintain good health and many things you can do to maintain good brain health. >> talk about smiling more than 6 times a day. >> stress is so bad for you. you have to keep in mind you have to relax and take it easy and enjoy life. remember to smile as often as you can. >> exercise more than 6 miles a week. >> people ask me how much exercise is enough. walking 6 miles a week reduces the risk of dementia and alzheimer's disease by 46 percent. equivalent of 3-6 miles a week. >> these are new names you need to remember? >> whooes may name again? yes do it yourself. make the effort to remember the names. remember by doing so you are boosting the size of your memory parts of the brain. >> eating a heart healthy diet. >> you want to eat heart healthy foods rich in antioxidants. i believe dha is the best brain food ever. >> that is a chemical. >> it is fatty acids you were talking about. there are controversial studies here and there but there have been double blind placebo control studies found clearly taking if afatty acids are good you. i take it my wife takes it and my daughters who are 6 and 8 take it. i was on doctor oz gives it to his dog. there are many woods enriched in dha. >> what are these milk? >> milk products. >> it az dha omega 3. >> this is what we look for when we buy products. >> that comes in natural food products. there are 9,000 that have this. you can take dha as a sup preliminary. it is really good for your brain. >> we were joking earlier he was talking about pushups and the benefits of them. you say the magic number is 50. >> that's how many i do every day frmth i think it. i think it's important that moving your of homemade with love joins us. you were in town today with the baltimore book festival. >> i was. it was such a great crowd who came out, too. this is the first time in baltimore but it has been a great experience so far. >> what are we making? >> apple breakfast bars. this is on my blog in jenny's kitchen.com. owe will get this started. i will melt a tablespoon of butter in here. we had a lazy relaxing summer i didn't have the girls in camp. we were chilling out waking up at 9:30 inned morning and all of a sudden school started 7:30 in the morning my girls were not breakfast people. what can i do to make breakfast fun. so instead of buying the prepackaged cereal bars which have a lot of fillers or words we can't pronounce i decided to make my own healthy version. first thing i took three arms and i will saute them in a little bit of butter. >> if we don't want to peel the apples. >> i have seen them with the apples already prepped and ready to go. you can do that. that's not a problem. we are going to saute these so they are nice and golden. they will smell nutty and gray grant and sweet. that takes 5-7 minutes for that part to happen. that is going to be our filling. if you don't have time to prep the filling you can use store bought jams. we are going to use the crest and toppings together. >> no cheating with the oats. >> those are old fashioned oats. we are going to use flaxseeds. they are really great for that. >> i like to get my hands in here. >> where is the cinnamon? >> you are getting cinnamon today. cinnamon and apple i am not really a fan of that pairing flavor. you can throw in cinnamon put all spice cloves in if you want to. i love the nice fresh natural flavor of apples. i keep it pretty clean here. i have butter that we have melted. >> how much butter is that? >> it is 8 tablespoons of butter, but it does make a nice amount of bars. when you bake you have to have a little bit of fat. you could use grape seed oil or vegetable oil. what you are looking for is just to get all of the ingredients combined together. what we are going to do -- >> we have 40 minutes -- 40 seconds. >> take half of the mixture and press it into the bottom of the pan get all of the way on the sides for it. we are not going to have time to finish it once you have it pressed into the pan you put a layer of the filling and take the rest of the toppings sprinkle it on top pat it down bake it in the oven for 45 minutes and this is what you end up coming out with. this is the apple version. i cut them in rectangles but you can do them in bite sized pieces. one last quick tip. those dry ingreed went dients w together you can mix it a night before a month before put it in a zip-loc bag label it. if you are using store bought jam you can butt put 24-year-old is in twas stabbed in the back. he was taken to an area hospital with nonlife threatening wounds. they honored mike rigel one of the navy yard shooting victims. he was protector of his daughters and 2,000 workers. he was a navy yard security guard. he was one of the last that were gunned down at the military installation september 16th. >> firefighters battle the new jersey was yesterday's move by the house moot? >> it could be. the senate is saying they have an opportunity to do. it is hot potato. the house could decide what it is going to do then. it sort of becomes a staring contest. the deadline hits and the government shuts down and it has that sort of effect. there are other things that could be done to de fund it or delay it a year. what i think is important to note is republicans are sticking to their stand to delay or de fund. democrats don't want to deal. democrats won't have this debate if it involves delaying or de funding in any way. meanwhile october 1st the law goes forward so does the shut down. >> i have to ask are you going to ask him how he did it how he made it 21 hours on the senate floor? >> reporter: lester, good morning to you. it seems like the only thing democrats and republicans can agree on today is that a government shutdown seems increasingly likely after the house of representatives passed that piece of legislation overnight, mostly along party lines. it is a bill that the white house has threatened to veto. meanwhile, across the country there is anger and frustration. >> you can yell all you want, but you're not silencing -- >> reporter: it was fireworks on the house floor saturday night. >> mr. speaker, the house is not in order. >> reporter: as the debate rages in washington, a thousand miles away they're watching it all closely at the everglades national park in florida. if the government shuts down, the park would close, more than 250 employees likely furloughed. >> we have a lot of dedicated national park service employees that are concerned about being on an extended furlough. >> reporter: a shutdown seems more likely by the minute after the republican-led house passed a bill overnight that would delay obama care by a year. >> tonight the republican majority will vote to shut the government down! >> all republicans are asking tonight is give the nation a year to study a 2500 page bill that even speaker pelosi hadn't a clue what was in it. >> reporter: the white house quickly fired back releasing a statement saying any member of the republican party who votes for this bill is voting for a shutdown. how would a shutdown impact you?
