with that? no, sir. how are you going to be able to handle taking direction and orders from other guys in your position? well, sir, i would think to myself if i listen to them then maybe one day i ll be able to get up there and be able to be the one. yeah, is great answer. even though this offender has all of the right answers, the decision to accept him into the unit is complicated. these juveniles come from horrible backgrounds. i tend not judge them but we want to ask yourselves do we think that they ll learn in this unit. the military team must weigh their personal feelings about the offender with the troubling events that brought him to pendleton in the first place. and competition to get into echo-15 is tough. i wouldn t say we re going to let him on the unit. we have to weigh him out once we go through everyone else. he s always followed my orders. he s never questioned me. i was a new guy. brand new on his unit and he never gave me an ounce of trouble. as
at this point in the presidency, remember, george bush s father, of course, after the gulf war, where he seemed invincible. he was presiding over a stronger economy than president obama now. you have so much fragility in this recovery, so much fragility, frankly, across the board, to say nothing of any other events that come up between now and then. right now, you have an unsettled republican field, you have a high pressure process that s going on right now about who has the kind of top tier track and the newt gingrich s and others on more of a populous track to see who emerges and who can raise money and who the party will rally around. david gregory, thank you very much. check out his exclusive interview with newt gingrich this sunday on meet the press. coming up next, indepth investigation into an elite military team responsible for the bin laden killing. front line correspond, stephen
missile and once again, you would never be sure that you had gotten osama bin laden and there might have been a lot of collateral damage. so you can always make different judgments about a decision like this but the president turned out to have made the correct judgment and was supported by a great military team and intelligence team and, of course, very brave navy s.e.a.l.s that went in. describe those navy s.e.a.l.s. it was a joint operation, not just navy s.e.a.l.s. but there were intelligence operatives who had been planning this for a long time. they have been planning this for a long time and building mock-ups of what the compound looks like. this is what these folks do, the cia. and this is what you expect our joint special operations command, consisting of navy s.e.a.l.s, army commandos, lots of resources that you can pull forward. but the s.e.a.l.s are at the top
no doubt that director petraeus will guide our intelligence professionals as they continue to adapt and innovate in an ever changing world. finally, i m pleased to announce my choice for the civilian military team that will lead our efforts in afghanistan in this year of transition. i m nominating a superb commander, lieutenant general john alan, to succeed general petraeus as commander of the international sxurtsecuritlnati. as a combat leader in iraq he helped turn the tide in anbar province. he s respected in the region and has been deeply involved in planning and executing our strategy in afghanistan. as our troops continue to sacrifice for our security, as we tragically saw again yesterday, general alan is the right commander for this vital mission. as coalition forces transfer
expertise, their commitment to our nation, and their courage in dangerous circumstances. their service to our country is of vital importance. indeed, it is all the more vital as it is all the more unheralded. in short, i have enormous respect for the men and women of the agency and if confirmed i will do my utmost to seb, represent, and lead the great intelligence professionals, as well as work closely with the dni and the other intel community leaders as director panetta has done so superbly over the past 2 1/2 years. as i return to afghanistan tomorrow i will do so with a sense of guarded optimism about the trajectory of the mission and the exceptional civil military team the president will nominate to lead that effort. indeed i can think of no two individuals better suited than general alan and ambassador crocker to build in the hard
