After years of discussion and debate, Marin County has finally unveiled a proposed ordinance that could soon lead to civilian oversight of the sheriff’s office. But a watchdog group is already sounding the alarm that the ordinance is “fundamentally flawed.”

Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina presented his plan to the supervisors at a public meeting on Tuesday as required under Senate Bill 34.

A local watchdog group is again raising concerns about the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, saying the law enforcement agency refuses to address its high incidence of racial profiling. Marin County Sheriff Jamie Scardina disputed the department’s need to make policing policy changes when I interviewed him last week.

Two dissenting members of the board — Stephanie Moulton-Peters and Mary Sackett — proposed instead to withhold approval and create a board subcommittee to delve into the issue.
