Grand Rapids Business Journal The Grand Rapids City Commission approved a contract with the Grand Rapids Pride Center for an in-person training program for all sworn members of the Grand Rapids police and fire departments. The training program will be designed to expand capacity and build awareness of inclusive public safety practices that recognize, affirm and show mutual respect for LGBTQ+ community members and intersecting identities. Public safety inclusive training will provide an examination and understanding of the history of the relationship between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community, create an understanding of the intersectionality between queerness and marginalized communities, and provide practical tools that will lead to a safer community through building trust based on better interactions between public safety employees and the LGBTQ+ community.

The training was approved Tuesday, April 13, by city commissioners at a cost not to exceed $20,000. It includes learning from past mistakes, awareness of oppression and microaggressions, misgendering and using gender-neutral language, best practices in de-escalation and crisis management involving LGBT individuals and more.
