BATON ROUGE – Under a compromise approved in the chaotic closing minutes of the springsession Thursday, state lawmakers limited a $2,000 pay increase for teachers to a one-yearstipend and cut $100 million from what the Senate had sought for the Louisiana Department of Health.

Louisiana lawmakers passed a final budget that includes a $2,000 teacher pay raise and $1,000 raise for support workers, but those raises are not recurring. Lawmakers also cut millions in health care and fell short of funding goal for early childhood education.

The final votes came with lawmakers demanding to know what happened with the limit on teacher pay raises and the health cuts, objecting that they did not know the details of bills they were voting on
