The sheer size of the waves was what intrigued the film s director, Finnish filmmaker Minna Dufton. And in the interest of research, she learned to surf, albeit on smaller waves.
A lot of the film is about big feelings and how to conquer them. Is that what you were going for with the title Big vs. Small ?
Minna Dufton:
Joana is tiny, and the wave is rather huge. And I have always been drawn to opposites. And I found it so interesting, how figure out, what is big and what is small in us humans?

Finnish independent documentary film BIG vs SMALL has been selected for international film festivals in both Dublin and Glasgow. Directed by Minna Dufton for Raggari Films, the film brings together Portugal’s first female big wave surfer, Joana “Tiny Fighter” Andrade and Finnish world champion free diver Johanna Nordblad in an extraordinary tale of facing one’s fears. Meanwhile, Joonas Berghäll’s documentary The Red Ring will also receive an international audience after Denmark-based film distributor LevelK acquired the world sales

Glasgow Film Festival, which runs from 24th February to 7th March 2021, has revealed the full programme for its 2021 festival, with screenings hosted on Glasgow Film’s new online viewing platform Glasgow Film At Home.
The programme contains 6 World premieres, 2 European premieres and 49 UK premieres.
Originally planned as a hybrid in-cinema and online festival, GFF21 will now take place online only, due to the lockdown restrictions affecting most of Scotland and the rest of the UK.
The festival will open on Wednesday 24 February with Lee Isaac Chung’s autobiographical drama following a Korean-American family ‘Minari’, starring ‘The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, and close on Sunday 7 March with Suzanne Lindon’s debut feature ‘Spring Blossom’, a coming-of-age tale set against a dreamy Parisian backdrop.
