George Floyd Square home of a makeshift memorial to the man has reportedly recently transformed.
NewsNation relays the area originally meant to remember the Minnesota resident who passed away while in police custody has now become a Seattle-style autonomous zone.
The acreage is currently blocked off, and NewsNation notes city leaders plan to remove the concrete barricade once former Officer Derek Chauvin’s trial has ended.
But
self-appointed rulers have claimed the territory and issued 24 demands. Until those or met, the idea goes, they won’t be stepping aside.
From the outlet:
The memorial, now called an autonomous zone, was set up by protesters and supporters at the now-vacant Speedway station. It’s very tense near the memorial and a militant-style group has closed off several blocks with barricades. They don’t allow the police inside.

“This year has been quite a year for our food shelf,” said Cindy Mumme, Redwood Area Food Shelf coordinator. “March brought with it a series of changes due to the pandemic. We changed our way of distribution to meeting our clients at the door of the building with their food supplies. With minimum contact, keeping our distance and wearing masks as mandatory requirements, we have come to a comfortable and safe environment both for our clients and volunteers.”
Mumme said because of many food distributions in the area, so many people self-quarantining, and increases in food insecurity funds, the number of people using the food shelf showed fluctuations over the last year. In June 2020, the food shelf served 39 households and by December 2020 the number increased to 82 households.

Senate Republicans are pushing to close what they call a loophole in Minnesota law to ban cities from implementing any form of rent control.
The effort is in apparent response to a proposal by three Minneapolis City Council members to put rent stabilization on the November ballot.

Under current state law, cities are only allowed to create rent control ordinances if approved by voters in a general election. If it makes it to the ballot in November, Minneapolis voters would be deciding if the city should adopt a rent stabilization ordinance with the details of the policy to follow.
