Emergency relief fund created for MN backstage professionals

The newly created Theater Emergency Relief Fund begins taking applications this week for grants specifically aimed at Minnesota theater and dance production and design professionals. The fund is being managed by the Minnesota Fringe which will take applications through its website Dec. 31 through Jan. 15. Fringe Executive Director Dawn Bentley said these behind the scenes workers are responsible for creating much of a performance’s magic. She said they are gig workers who have been hit hard by the pandemic which shuttered theaters 10 months ago. Those people have been without work since March, and they are often forgotten in some of the relief packages, she said.

Theaters remain dark to audiences as COVID-19 restrictions extended

Created: December 17, 2020 04:33 PM The doors are closed at Open Window Theatre in Inver Grove Heights as the state of Minnesota announced continued restrictions on indoor entertainment venues Wednesday. We have what we call a redemptive vision in the arts, which is producing plays, live performing arts that have a message of faith, hope and reconciliation, said founder and Executive Artistic Director Jeremy Stanbary. Open Window had a production on the stage when the state closed indoor entertainment due to spiking COVID-19 numbers in November, and that will be their last one until at least early January. We had to pour a lot of time and effort and financial resources into our COVID preparedness plan,” Stanbary said.
