Looting, Riots Break Out in Minneapolis After Police Return Fire, Kill Wanted Felon

Burning, rioting, and looting broke out in Minneapolis on Friday night after deputies shot and killed a wanted felon who fired on them. Deputies assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force attempted to take the man wanted for being a felon in possession of a firearm into custody.
Police officials in Minnesota say the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force attempted to arrest 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith on June 3 for a warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm, the Associated Press reported. As sheriff’s office deputies assigned to the task force approached Smith’s vehicle, he reportedly refused to comply with orders and pulled a handgun. Officials confirmed Smith fired at least one shot from inside his car.

Riot Breaks Out in Portland over Shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota

Portland, Oregon, police declared a protest over the shooting death of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, to be a riot after the crowd turned violent Monday night. Police made multiple arrests after orders to disperse were ignored.
At about 8:30 p.m. Monday night, a crowd gathered at the Penumbra Kelly Building and began throwing objects at police officers, according to a statement from Portland Police Bureau officials. The crowd removed barrier tape and threw glass bottles, frozen water bottles, rocks, ball bearings, and other objects at officers. They also shot fireworks at the police.
Another Night of Protests in Minnesota
BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) Police clashed with protesters for a second night in the Minneapolis suburb where a police officer fatally shot a Black man in a traffic stop over the weekend. Brooklyn Center s police chief said the officer had apparently intended to fire a Taser, not a handgun, as 20-year-old Daunte Wright struggled with fellow officers. Police Chief Tim Gannon described the shooting as “an accidental discharge.” Wright died Sunday in Brooklyn Center, a city of about 30,000 people just north of Minneapolis. His death sparked protests and unrest. Police reported 40 arrests Monday night at the Brooklyn Center protest. The Minneapolis area was already on edge because of the trial of the police officer charged with the murder of George Floyd.
