Lifelong Saugus resident John Bakopolus is the new head coach of the Lynnfield High School boys’ basketball team, his first head coaching varsity job. He has been a Lynnfield assistant throughout the past five years under the direction of veteran mentor Scott Mackenzie, who stepped down at the end of last season.
Bakopolus applied for the job in April, and was named head coach in May. He played high school basketball at St. Mary’s of Lynn from 2006-2009, where he was the shooting guard. He then went on to Nichols College in Dudley, where he played for a year and a half, before transferring to Salem State University to complete his bachelor’s degree, while not continuing his athletic pursuits as a player on the court.
