On Monday, May 24, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that MIOSHA has relaxed its COVID-19 regulations. Effective May 24, 2021, all employees can return to the workplace, and fully vaccinated employees may do so without the need for masks or social distancing limitations.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â Governor Gretchen Whitmer hosted a press conference Monday morning in Grand Rapids to provide an update on MIOSHA return-to-work guidelines.
The update on MIOSHA return-to-work guidelines coincides with the first step of the MI Vacc to Normal plan.
Now that the state has reached the 55% vaccination threshold, MIOSHA has removed the requirement that employers must create a âpolicy prohibiting in-person work for employees to the extent that their work activities can feasibly be completed remotely.â The agency has also rescinded the draft permanent COVID-19 rules, and the public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, May 26 is canceled. The Republican-led Legislature has been furious over what it views as Whitmer’s consistent overreach during the pandemic. But now, the governor is agreeing to discuss a role for the Legislature in future orders.

Whitmer also agreed to withdraw Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (MIOSHA) permanent COVID work rules and have a conversation about formalizing legislative input on epidemic orders. Republicans have agreed to fully negotiate the state budget and federal funding from the CARES Act and the American Rescue Act with the budget director.
