The district’s latest plan for educating its multilingual students has stroked fears that BPS is not only putting children’s bilingualism at risk, but their ability to learn other subjects, such as math, science and history.
The plan was originally intended to take effect next year in grades K-8 and the following year in grades 9-12, with all English learners moving to inclusive settings by the 2025-26 school year.
The pace of new arrivals quickened in 2022, with 5,600 migrants enrolling in public high schools. Half of the newcomers registered at 14 high schools statewide.
