Homegrown Music Festival 2021: Day 4

Christine Dean for KUMD In recent years the mid-point of the Duluth Homegrown Music Festival was dubbed “Westside Wednesday,” with music lovers fanning out to venues from Lincoln Park to West Duluth. This year, Soup Town night came early as Earth Rider Brewery in Superior kicked off their in-person series of shows dubbed “Starfire Unofficial Birthday Bash” that will continue through Saturday of Homegrown Week. Feeding Leroy performs at Earthrider Credit Christine Dean for KUMD The evening’s festivities began at 5pm, with Black River Revue playing under Earthrider’s giant tent. Fans trickled onto the grounds throughout the evening, with a reasonably-sized crowd gathered by the time of Charlie Parr’s closing set. Whether inside the tent or outside on the grounds near one of the fires needed on a chilly May evening, fans still had space to spread out as needed. It didn’t quite feel back to normal, but it was obvious that vaccinations are making folks of all ages feel more comfortable with venturing out and sharing space and even hugs with friends they may not have been able to be with in a year.

A transatlantic livestream on the gig poster of the week

click to enlarge This week's featured gig poster advertises the Chicago "stop" on Steve Wynn's Impossible Tour: a seven-week concert series that's virtually hosted by 13 music venues and broadcast by livestreaming platform StageIt. Wynn, a founding member of Los Angeles alternative-rock band the Dream Syndicate, put together a series of popular concert streams on his Facebook page last year. For his Impossible Tour, he decided to invite some of his favorite international independent venues to host dates—it's a way for him to show support for their work and to introduce his fans to venues in cities that COVID-19 may prevent them from visiting. Wynn and drummer Linda Pitmon (his wife and collaborator) will stay safe by performing live from the Chimp Factory, their rehearsal space in Queens, New York.
