The estimated number of missing persons is simultaneously incomplete and cringeworthy. One count suggests that of the more than 600,000 individuals currently reported missing, more than 200,000 are individuals of color. The news media was fascinated with the disappearance of Gabrielle Petito. But the families of many women who go missing, especially women of color, struggle for attention.

Some experts say the nation faces "Missing White Women Syndrome," which is defined by the heavier media attention White women and girls receive when they go missing compared to anyone outside of those demographics.

Many organizations like the Black and Missing Foundation are now pointing out racial disparities when it comes to missing persons cases.

As of Sept. 22, Idaho State Police told KTVB that there was a total of 167 missing person cases in Idaho, nine of those missing people are Indigenous.
