The Thomson River may reach the major flood level in Sale as early as tonight.

A mans body has been discovered in floodwaters in Victoria amid one of the worst storms to hit the state in decades - as a quarter of a million homes remain without power.

Cars were pushed to the roof of the underground garage in Traralgon, in the states Gippsland region around 7am on Thursday when the complex was suddenly flooded.

As tens of thousands of customers in the state remained without power on Thursday night, the Bureau of Meteorology warned more rain would fall in Gippsland on Friday.
