Northeast Ohio Congress members seek big money for local projects through earmarks

(Gus Chan / The Plain Dealer) The Plain Dealer WASHINGTON, D.C. - Earmarks are back, and Northeast Ohio members of Congress want to use them to fund everything from local sewer improvements to police communication centers to a park. The earmarking process lets members of Congress seek money for specific projects in yearly funding bills. Earmark advocates say Congress members are more familiar with deserving local projects than bureaucrats at federal agencies who would otherwise allot federal dollars. Critics argue earmarks enable corruption, as in the case of former California GOP Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who took payoffs in exchange for direct

Ithaca Common Council Passes Police Reform Plan, Calls for New Department, But No Abolition

ITHACA, NY (WSKG) Following weeks of speculation that its police reform plans would lead to “abolishing” the police department, the Ithaca Common Council voted to approve its recommendations Wednesday. Counter protestors, some affiliated with Black Lives Matter and Ithaca Democratic Socialists of America, gathered on the Ithaca Commons during a “pro-police’ rally in March. (Vaughn Golden/WSKG) Amid a few hours of deliberating over particularities in the wording of the proposals, it was clear that common council supported a continued role of police in the city, albeit as part of a new overarching department. At one point during the meeting, Councilor Donna Flemming offered an amendment to the resolution to eliminate a specific line dealing with what had been originally coined as the Department of Community Solutions and Public Safety. Flemming’s amendment would remove the term “create a department” from the recommendation.

Clean up ongoing, D12 Snowfighters prepare for overnight snow, morning ice

/ WSIP AM 1490 | CBS Sports Feb 17, 2021 5:45 PM Each county in Highway District 12 is under a National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning tonight through tomorrow, Thursday, February 18. Heavy, wet snow is expected to start in Knott County around 9 p.m. and spread quickly. The precipitation will move through Lawrence, Johnson, and northwestern Floyd County as it travels east. The rest of Floyd and Knott, plus Martin, Pike, and Letcher could see precipitation as early as 10 p.m. The only question about the forecast, according to the Jackson Office, NWS, is whether Letcher and Pike counties get snow or rain. Snow accumulations up to six inches are expected in every county except Letcher, where the amount of snow is estimated at three to five inches. There is a chance, however, that a warm air mass moving from south to north could limit Letcher and parts of Pike County to rain.

Shooting of murder suspect in Corning ruled justifiable

An investigation into the shooting of a murder suspect in Corning on Dec. 11 concluded the incident was justifiable under the fleeing felon rule, said Red Bluff Police Chief Kyle Sanders. The Tehama County District Attorney’s Office has been tasked with investigating the shooting of Elfego Chavez Acevedo, 37, of Red Bluff who, wanted on a murder charge in the Aug. 3 death of Arturo Eugene Bent III, was in a six-hour standoff with law enforcement in Corning on the day he was shot by the Red Bluff police officer with a department-issued rifle. “Under common law the fleeing felon rule permits the use of deadly force against a felon who is clearly in flight from apprehension,” Sanders added on Friday, Dec. 18.
