Abu Dhabi: The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first graduate-level, research-based artificial intelligence (AI) university, has officially welcomed its first student cohort at a virtual event with students from across the world, who will be beginning their studies in Abu Dhabi later this week.
Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of the MBZUAI Board of Trustees, delivered a welcome speech emphasising the critical importance of AI, especially during the pandemic, as well as in transforming industries to achieve greater outcomes. He was joined by Professor Dr Eric Xing, president of MBZUAI, as well as members from the student body, faculty, and staff from the university.

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first graduate-level, research-based artificial intelligence (AI) university, is welcoming its first cohort of students from around the world as they arrive in Abu Dhabi ahead of the start of the January 2021 academic year.
More than 2,000 of students from nearly 100 countries had applied to enroll at the new Abu Dhabi-based university. After a rigorous admissions process, 80 students from 29 countries are set to begin their AI education journey when MBZUAI starts classes this month. The students include 67 accepted in the university’s MSc programs in computer vision, and machine learning, while 13 have been accepted for MBZUAI’s PhD programs in the same fields. The university’s inaugural student body includes 31 percent female students, a rarity in the technical fields that often still skew heavily toward male students.
