NEW DELHI (AP) Altaf Ahmad Shah, a prominent politician in Kashmir who challenged India’s rule over the disputed region for decades and had been jailed by Indian authorities for the past five years, has died while in police custody, his family said Tuesday.

Altaf Ahmad Shah, a Kashmiri politician who campaigned for a separate Kashmir, died in police custody in New Delhi of renal cancer. He had been arrested in 2017 in a "terror-funding case".
They both carved out sterling reputations as military and political leaders over years of public service. But both also saw their legacies tarnished by their actions in the long, bloody war in Iraq.
