University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Taufiq Yap Yun Hin underlined the need to preserve natural resources which are limited and depleting at a faster rate due to unsustainable practices, overexploitation and improper management of resources and the environment.
“Because our natural resources truly are limited, we need to use what we have while being mindful of others, now and beyond,” he said during his opening remarks at the 5th International Conference on Southeast Asian Natural Resources and Environmental Management (Sanrem 2021).
According to Taufiq, the concept of sustainable development was defined by the Brundtland Commission in 1987 as a pattern of social and structured economic transformation that optimises economic and societal benefits available in the present, without jeopardising the likely potential benefits in the future.

As Malaysians prepare for National Day 2021, it is time for citizens to cultivate a broader understanding on the true meaning of independence and look beyond the nation’s colonial past.
