LOS ANGELES, April 27 — This year’s Oscars audience plummeted by more than half to a record low 9.85 million viewers, broadcaster ABC said Monday — a staggering if widely expected drop for a ceremony that many viewers found short on humour and star power.
The whopping 58 per cent tumble from last year’s previous 23.6 million nadir had been anticipated for Hollywood’s biggest night, after other award shows held during the pandemic also suffered precipitous declines.

Filmmaker Chloe Zhao has scripted history at the 93rd Academy Awards by becoming the first woman of colour and only the second woman in the Oscars' history to win best director trophy.
Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win best director in 2009 for her film "The Hurt Locker".

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Filmmaker Chloe Zhao spoke Sunday evening about the power of storytelling with the cast and crew of best picture winner "Nomadland" -- after making history as the first Asian woman to win best director.
Zhao is also the first woman of color and only the second woman to ever win an Oscar for helming a feature film.
