The Hawai‘i State Department of Education’s five public schools on Moloka‘i will be closed for students and staff on Monday, Jan. 30, due to impacts from severe weather.
The impacted schools are: Kaunakakai Elementary; Kilohana Elementary; Maunaloa Elementary; Moloka‘i Middle; and Moloka‘i High.
An increase in teacher pay will make a significant impact on veteran Hawaiʻi public school educators many of whom have had stagnant wages for years. For several teachers, the passing of a landmark legislative bill made them reconsider retirement. HPR's Casey Harlow has more.
Both Josh Green and Vicky Cayetano say teacher pay increases are key to improving the system. The candidates also floated ideas such as housing stipends and a new literacy program.
