Dozens of rivers and streams in the US state of Alaska are turning rusty orange. Scientists believe that permafrost, or frozen land, is what is causing the hue change. They claim that when the environment warmed, minerals kept in permafrost were released into glistening, clean water. Researchers are also concerned, as this change could threaten fisheries and drinking water quality

Alaskas melting permafrost is dumping toxic metals into the states rivers, turning them bright orange and making the water highly acidic. The contaminated rivers are so vibrant they can be seen from space, and the problem is likely to get much worse in the future.

Thawing permafrost may be driving degradation
