Amid a surge in monkeypox cases, the United States declared the monkeypox virus a public health emergency as reports claimed cases nationwide had risen to over 6,600 on Thursday. New York has become the epicentre of the monkeypox virus with most cases being reported in the country's financial hub. Although the US has delivered large quantities of JYNNEOS vaccines, considered a safe option to combat the disease, however, reports claim it is still short of the target.

At present, the global outbreak is concentrated among men who have sex with men. Experts, however, caution against stigma, noting that it would impede the process of containing the disease.

India has reported four cases of monkeypox so far - three from Kerala and one from Delhi - the latest being that of a 34-year-old man in the national capital with no history of foreign travel testing positive for the disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded its highest level of alarm for monkeypox declaring it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

The experts will meet on June 23 to assess whether the continuing outbreak represents a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the highest level of global alert, which currently applies only to the COVID-19 pandemic and polio.
