Monkeypox death in India: Indian state of Kerala has reported the first monkeypox-related death in the country. The deceased, a 22-year-old man, hailed from Thrissur district of the state, according to The Wire.

There have been four confirmed cases of monkeypox in India so far, three in Kerala and one in the capital city of Delhi.

With India recording its first monkeypox death and many looking to take the smallpox shot as a precaution, doctors say safety lies in preventive steps not panicking

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.

Monkeypox spread in India: The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a public health advisory stating that some cases (of monkeypox) have been identified through sexual health clinics in communities of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

Monkeypox virus: Health Minister K Sudhakar told reporters that there was no need for people to panic as it is not a deadly disease.

State Health Minister Veena George initiated a high-level inquiry into the death of a youth, presenting with monkeypox-like symptoms. The youth hailed from Chavakkad Kuranjiyur in Thrissur district andtested positive in a foreign country.

The children, whose parents are labourers, had been ill for the past 12 days and were receiving treatment privately initially.

Monkeypox outbreak: On Friday, Spains health ministry reported that 4,298 people were infected with the virus, making it the leading European country for monkeypox cases. 

According to a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), rectal pain and penile swelling (edema) are commonly seen in the current outbreak as compared to the previous outbreaks.
