Opposition Demands Update On Tests For New COVID Strain

11:46 pm, Thu December 31, 2020 Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy - file photo Dr. Morais Guy   Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr. Morais Guy says the country needs to be updated on the tests for the new strain of COVID-19 on positive samples taken from recent UK arrivals to Jamaica.   The Ministry of Health said some of the samples were sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in Trinidad last Thursday.    It is almost a week now and we would like to know whether the ministry has received the results yet and if we have received the results, what are they? And if we have not received the results, why have we not received the results? he demanded. 

Opposition Wants Travel Ban Extended To Other Countries With New Covid-19 Variants

10:50 am, Wed December 23, 2020 Opposition Spokesman on Health Dr Morais Guy   The parliamentary opposition wants the government to extend the travel ban to other countries where the new strain of  Covid-19 has been detected to reduce the likelihood of it spreading to Jamaica. On Monday, the country s borders were closed to flights from the UK where the new strain has been detected. Dr Morais Guy, Opposition Spokesperson on Health, pointed out that the coronavirus variant has been detected in a number of  countries and accordingly he wants the government to implement measures to protect Jamaica from possible risks. New variants of  Covid 19 have so far been detected in Denmark, Sweden, and South Africa.

Accordingly, he has recommended the testing of all persons who arrived recently from the United Kingdom, to determine whether they might have brought this faster-spreading version of the virus into Jamaica.    The government has announced that Jamaica s borders are being closed to flights from the UK for two weeks in light of the threat of the spread of the new strain.
