we will be here, doing a primetime recap of tomorrow s january 6th hearing, starting at 8 pm eastern. so if you are used to seeing me or msnbc prime, tune in an hour early tomorrow for that primetime recap of the next january 6th hearing. i wish you a pm eastern tomorrow night. now it s time for the last word with lawrence o donnell. good evening, lawrence. in other words, msnbc audiences are going to get even more rachael tomorrow night. i m quoting myself right now. and you will once again be my lead in for tomorrow nights 10 pm hour after i join you in the 8 pm for our earlier coverage. is it absolutely impossible for you to get your show prepped when we hold you onset for 9 pm? and then here s the amazing thing, the time when we did that and everyone at the last word staff was amazed with us the show was completely done, before we started the 8 pm coverage. and it s never been done before 8 pm wow. there s something about deadlines, rachel. there s s
and that s why president zelenskyy needs more weapons, he needs more firepower from the west. and that s why today s call and the new billion dollar aid package was a significant development in the war. let s listen to what general mark milley said about the state of the war today. the numbers clearly favor the russians in terms of artillery. they do outnumber and out range, many, many times. they do have enough forces. but the russians have run into a lot of problems. they ve got pneumatic drill issues, they ve got morale issues, leadership issues. and a lot of other issues. so, the ukrainians are fighting a heroic fight. this fight in the donbas has been going on since the 6th of april. advances the russians have made have been very slow. a tough slog, a battle of attrition. almost world war i like. and the russians have suffered tremendous amount of casualties. and that s determined fall, is it now a matter of keeping the ukrainians equipped as well
russian troops. is that a factor in ukraine s success? yes, there are two factors in morale issues. first of all, they have no idea what they re doing and why they re doing this. they are clearly understand that they re losing. they clearly understand they have a very bad support and logistics and command and control situation is very significant with problems. that s one thing. the other thing is that generally, the russian doctrine and the russian organization is based on soviet, and there, it s highly centralized, and it has no respect for humans at all, including their own. they don t pick up their bodies. they don t care how many soldiers they lose, and they re losing already far more than expected. and obviously, that is great for low morale because people understand their commander is not caring about them. that s a massive factor in their performance. so ukraine s defense chief says ukraine is now in the long
and won t try to take territory in other parts of ukraine. what do you think? i think they re saying that because they can t win elsewhere. that s really their only play at this point. they have shown themselves to be totally incapable of conducting effective maneuver operations against kyiv. they have executed a poor strategy. their military is performing terribly. their leadership is poor. they have morale issues. they re leaving their dead in the streets. you know, american armies would never abandon their soldiers like that. they re performing terribly and i think that s why they re shifting their strategy to the donetsk. and yet, you know, let s show people a little bit of what is going on on the ground. just yesterday there was strikes all the way over here in the western part of ukraine. perhaps just a signal to the west, but the ukranians are saying they are retaking some territory over here. near the city of kharkiv over here near the city of mariupol which has been under
