A huge bomb blast at one of the biggest mosques in western Afghanistan today killed its influential imam, who called earlier this year for those who commit "the smallest act" against the government to be beheaded.

Mohammad Daud Mohammadi, an official at the Herat ambulance centre, said ambulances transported 18 dead and 21 wounded to hospitals in the city on Friday.

A huge bomb blast at one of the biggest mosques in western Afghanistan today killed its influential imam, who called earlier this year for those who commit "the smallest act" against the government to be beheaded.

The cart bombing happened in western Kabul, in the Sar-e Karez area. Initial reports said two people were killed but the casualty toll swiftly rose as the wounded were taken to local hospitals.

An explosion that occurred at a Kabul mosque on Friday killed more than 50 people.

Police in Afghanistan said on Friday that the Taliban had arrested a suspected mastermind of the Afghan mosque attack. The suspect is reportedly an Islamic State (IS) militant.
