ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- The debate over Newfoundland and Labrador's troubled, pandemic-delayed election moved to the courtroom Monday, where a judge was asked to order a recount in a hotly contested St. John's riding. New Democrat Leader Allison Coffin has applied for a judicial recount in her East-Quidi Vidi district, where she lost her seat by 53 votes. Coffin has also filed a separate application to have the results in her district overturned and a byelection called. Former Progressive Conservative candidates Jim Lester and Sheila Fitzgerald have also filed applications to have the results in their respective ridings overturned. "The hope is that this isn't something we have to worry about on a go-forward basis, because we're not going to have an election like this again," NDP president and lawyer Kyle Rees told reporters Monday outside the Supreme Court building in downtown St. John's.

After losing his seat by 109 votes in last month's provincial election, PC candidate Jim Lester is turning to the courts in the hopes of having the results voided and a new election called in his former district, but he also wants a ruling on whether the vote adhered to Newfoundland and Labrador legislation.
"It's very important to have faith in the outcome of elections," Lester told reporters on Wednesday.

The Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party is promising to do a better job of vetting potential candidates in light of controversial tweets by two candidates in this year's campaign.
Andrew Lovell, the party's candidate for Conception Bay South, used derogatory anti-gay language in tweets several years ago in tweets to friends.
Lovell wrote, "Faggot!!!" and "Have a couple beer cooled off for me dick licker," in August 2012.
In August 2013, he wrote, "Comin at you fags! First couple rounds might be an auto draft then flatout dick jokes!" The online publication True North first reported about Andrew Lovell's homophobic tweets.
